Inside a dashboard

A close reading of dashboards in Antvia Intelligence. It takes Business pulse tile by tile: what a figure tile carries, how a tile says it is not current, and the bridge, trend, gap and split charts beneath. It then opens the service, regional, satisfaction and marketing dashboards to show why each question gets a different chart, and how every chart can be read as a table. It ends with a repair in Antvia Data clearing the warnings on the dashboard in place.

Introduction

0:00
Antvia Intelligence. Inside a dashboard. Figures with their direction and their doubt, and a chart chosen for each question.

A figure, read properly

0:07
A figure, read properly. Business pulse, the four numbers at the top.
0:12
Business pulseBusiness pulse is the dashboard the leadership team at Acme Home Appliances, a demo company, opens most. Forty-seven people read it last month.
0:22
A figure tileA figure tile carries more than a number: ₹20.3 crore, up 4.5% on the same days last year, and the plan due by now, ₹21.1 crore.
0:33
DirectionThe sparkline is revenue per working day over twelve months. A month-to-date total and eleven full months cannot share a line; a daily rate can.
0:44
Weight, not redGross margin is 32.4%, down 0.6 points. A bad change is set in heavier type rather than red, because red is kept for something being broken.
0:56
FlaggedChannel stock is flagged nine days old. The tile says which table it reads and when that table last refreshed.
1:05
UnverifiedCustomer satisfaction is flagged unverified: three quality checks are failing on the feedback table.
1:12
Said once, up topThe dashboard also says it once above the tiles, so nobody has to find the flags one by one.

Four questions, four charts

1:21
Four questions, four charts. Why, how it moved, where the gap is, where it comes from.
1:25
WhyWhy is EBITDA short? A waterfall shows the arithmetic: ₹243 lakh planned, ₹185 lakh made, with material cost taking ₹34 lakh.
1:36
As a tableEvery chart turns into a table with one click, for anyone who needs the exact numbers or cannot read the colours.
1:47
How it movedRevenue by month, against plan, for twelve months. The festive peak in October, and a July that came in under plan.
1:58
Where the gap isWhere is the gap? Distance from plan, drawn directly: West is ₹1.18 crore behind, the other three within ₹30 lakh either way.
2:10
Where it comes fromAnd where the revenue comes from: distributors are half of it, marketplaces a quarter. The shares are lopsided enough for area to read clearly.
2:22
The numbers behind itAs a table: the same five channels with their values, distributors first.

Service, day by day

2:29
Service, day by day. A calendar, a Pareto and a distribution.
2:42
Open ticketsService operations daily. Open tickets are 3,940, up 38%, and AquaPro 2.0 accounts for 840 of them.
2:50
Not the same thingEighty-one percent closed inside SLA. Visits made on time is 94%, and the tile says why those are not the same thing.
3:01
A calendarA calendar heatmap, because the rhythm is the finding: quiet Sundays, and a step up from 20 July when AquaPro 2.0 launched.
3:12
The few causesA Pareto finds the few causes behind most misses. A part not in stock is the biggest, then no engineer free.
3:23
The spreadA histogram shows how visits closed are spread across 1,120 engineers, which an average would hide.
3:31
Current enoughThese tiles read service tables a day and a half behind the CRM. Under three days, the dashboard does not flag them.

Spread and ranking

3:41
Spread and ranking. The regional view, beyond the average.
3:53
Distributors billedRegional sales performance. 279 of 470 distributors have been billed this month; in the West, 51 of 120.
4:03
The spreadAn average hides whether a region is tight or carried by one distributor. The range shows median, middle half and full spread, and the West sits low on all three.
4:15
Area by monthA heatmap shows five areas over six months. Pune fades from March, while Coimbatore and Hyderabad peak in May.
4:26
Named, with a reasonLists name the areas furthest below plan, with a note where there is a known reason: the West regional head role has been open seven weeks.
4:39
And aboveAnd the furthest above. Coimbatore leads, with its best July on record.

Agreement and flow

4:46
Agreement and flow. Satisfaction and marketing, drawn for the question.
4:56
A rating scaleRatings are drawn centred on neutral, bad to the left and good to the right. Engineer punctuality has the most poor ratings.
5:08
Small multiplesEight product lines, one small chart each, on the same scale. Purifiers drop in the last month, when AquaPro 2.0 arrived.
5:18
Still unverifiedEvery tile here reads the feedback table, so every tile is flagged until its checks pass again.
5:32
A SankeyWhere do leads go? Forty-four thousand leads, by source, through contact and demo to purchase. Search brings the most, and fewer than one lead in ten ends in a purchase.
5:47
Stacked areaSpend by channel over six months: the total and its make-up, with search at the bottom where it reads most clearly.
5:57
Failing checksThe cost-per-lead tile is flagged: its mart is failing three checks, so ₹141 a lead is a number nobody is standing behind yet.

The warnings clear

6:08
The warnings clear. Repair both feeds, and Business pulse is clean.
6:14
Two repairsIn Antvia Data, both broken feeds are repaired: the channel stock portal and the survey agency file drop.
6:47
No flagsBack on Business pulse, the warning above the tiles has gone, and channel stock is current.
6:55
VerifiedCustomer satisfaction is verified: the feedback table passes its checks again.
7:00
Same page, same numbersNothing on the dashboard was edited. It reads the catalog every time it draws, so it trusts exactly what the catalog does.

Close

7:10
Every tile says what it is worth. Figures with direction, comparison and context. Stale and unverified tiles flagged with their cause. A chart chosen for each question, and a table behind every chart. Warnings that clear when the data does.
