You read that the modern data stack is Fivetran for ingest, Snowflake for storage, dbt for transformation and Looker for reporting, and each recommendation was correct. Then you counted the contracts.

The honest split

- Governance across the whole span rather than per tool
- Measurement, which no combination of these four provides
- Every piece is best in class in its own category
- You can replace any one component without touching the others
- A large market of people who know each individual tool
What integration actually costs
Not the connection. The connections are straightforward and well documented. The cost is everything that has to be true across all four at once.
Access policy has to be defined in Snowflake, honoured by dbt, and reflected in Looker. Lineage stops at each boundary unless somebody stitches it. When a number looks wrong, the investigation crosses four products and four support queues. And an upgrade in any one of them is a compatibility question for the other three.
That work is a job. In a business with a platform team it is a reasonable job. In a business without one it is the reason the project takes nine months.
The thing four vendors cannot give you
None of them measures whether a decision was worth making. It is not an omission on their part; the capability requires a metric definition the whole business shares and a record of what was expected before the change went live. No combination of ingest, storage, transformation and dashboards produces that.
When the assembled stack is the right answer
You have a platform team who will own the integration, you want to swap components independently, and you value best-in-class per layer over one coherent whole. That is a legitimate architecture and plenty of good businesses run it.
